Plymouth City Council’s Taxi Licensing Team will now play a larger role in public safety after receiving new powers through the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) from Devon and Cornwall Police.
The accreditation gives the team limited police powers to help tackle anti-social behaviour, assist with traffic management, and strengthen joint working with police officers. The move follows a formal training programme with police colleagues covering traffic control and public engagement.
Once fully accredited, officers can request names and addresses in cases of anti-social behaviour, stop and direct traffic to protect public safety, and require identification if individuals fail to comply. They will also be able to share and receive intelligence directly with Devon and Cornwall Police.
Council officers will continue to wear their standard uniforms but will now display the CSAS logo. They will also carry police-approved identification badges and powers cards to confirm their new responsibilities.
The scheme has been used in other areas of the country and across Devon and Cornwall with positive results. Plymouth’s introduction of CSAS powers is expected to provide a more visible and responsive uniformed presence in the city.
Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety for Plymouth City Council, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for our Taxi Licensing Team and a real boost for community safety in Plymouth. By equipping our officers with additional powers and training, we’re making sure they can respond quickly and effectively to issues that matter to residents. It’s about being proactive, visible, and working hand-in-hand with the police to keep people safe."
