A man has been reported after officers from the North West Motorway Police caught him cycling along the M60.

Officers intercepted the rider after spotting him while they were on an emergency call. Officers successfully removed him from the motorway safely before reporting him for the offence.

The man said he was using the motorway to complete his journey because his "maps" told him to, suggesting it was the quickest route.

The incident was highlighted by the NW Motorway Police on their official Facebook page, where a spokesperson said: "XT84 going to an emergency when they came across this pedal cyclist cycling along the M60.

"Rider stopped and stated his maps told him to go on the motorway as it was the quickest route Man facepalming Rider removed from motorway network and reported."

Cyclists are among a few modes of transport which are prohibited from using motorways in the UK.

The UK Government website states: "Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences, riders of motorcycles under 50 cc, cyclists, horse riders, certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission), agricultural vehicles, and powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters."
