A so-called "professional driver" has been criticised by police for travelling from London to Southend with a badly damaged windscreen.

Essex Roads Policing Team pulled the driver over, who went on to claim to be a professional driver despite choosing to drive the 40+ mile trip from the capital to the coast with a huge crack in the windscreen right in front of the driver’s seat.

The incident was highlighted on Twitter @EPRoadsPoliving, where a spokesperson for the force said: “Driver of this car claimed to be a professional driver but still chose to drive this evening from London to Southend with his windscreen in this condition.

“Driver reporter and issued with points and a fine.”

Having a cracked windscreen, especially one as badly damaged as this one, can impede a driver’s vision, making it difficult to see the road ahead. Cracks can also cause glare from sunlight making it even more difficult to see approaching traffic and other road hazards.

Driving with such a damaged windscreen is considered a motoring offence and could constitute as using a motor vehicle which is in a dangerous condition.

If a driver is stopped by police while driving with a cracked windscreen, especially if damaged badly, will almost certainly receive a fine and three penalty points on their licence.

TaxiPoint have approached the police to find out in what capacity the man claimed to be a “professional driver”, whether it be a private hire driver, taxi driver or other.
