A South Gloucestershire licensed private hire driver has been convicted after falsely nominating another person as the driver responsible for a red light traffic offence, prompting a warning from Avon and Somerset Police to the wider taxi and private hire trade.
The case was heard at Bath Magistrates’ Court on 27 May, where the driver was convicted of failing to provide driver details.
The court imposed six DVLA penalty points along with £870 in fines and costs after it emerged the driver had nominated a non-licensed individual instead of admitting they had been behind the wheel at the time of the offence.
The conviction has now been referred to the relevant licensing authority, which will decide whether the individual remains a fit and proper person to continue holding a private hire driver’s licence.
Licensing authorities can review a driver’s suitability following criminal convictions or conduct that raises concerns about honesty and integrity.
PC Patrick Quinton, Taxi Cop for Avon and Somerset Police, said: “Despite my previous warnings, drivers are still making the mistake of naming other people as driving at the time of a traffic offence when it was really them.”
