Private hire drivers warned of East London hijackers and robbers

Perry Richardson

The GMB Professional Drivers branch have issued an urgent warning to private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers operating in the E17 and E4 areas following a surge in hijacking incidents.

The police have reportedly advised the GMB that drivers are being targeted in these areas. Initially, PHV drivers are approached by two males who open the car door. This initial contact quickly escalates as several other individuals join in, culminating in a robbery.

The pattern of crime has raised serious concerns about the safety of PHV drivers.

A GMB Pro Drivers spokesperson said: “We have been advised by the Police, drivers are being hijacked in the E17 and E4 areas.

“Private Hire Vehicles (PHV) drivers are being approached by two males who open the door and are then quickly joined by a number of other males and the robbery occurs.”
