A private hire vehicle driver has been reported by West Midlands Police after being caught using a mobile phone while driving in Birmingham.

Officers from the WMP Traffic team, who were on OPTramline patrol, spotted the silver Toyota Prius being driven in what they described as an “unprofessional manner”. When officers stopped the vehicle, they found the driver was using his mobile phone.

Further checks revealed that the driver already had seven points on his licence. The incident was shared by police on social media, where officers reminded road users of the risks linked to the “fatal four” driving offences, which include using a mobile phone while driving.

The driver now faces further enforcement action, and police say the case serves as another example of the dangers of distracted driving.

What are the ‘Fatal Four’?

The ‘fatal four’ are the four main driving behaviours identified by UK police forces as the leading causes of serious and fatal road collisions. They are:

  • Speeding – driving above the speed limit or too fast for road conditions.

  • Using a mobile phone while driving – including texting, calling, or using apps.

  • Not wearing a seatbelt – by either the driver or passengers.

  • Driving under the influence – of alcohol or drugs.

Police across the UK regularly run enforcement campaigns targeting these offences, as they are directly linked to preventable deaths and serious injuries on the roads.
