A joint operation between Avon and Somerset Police, DVSA, and local council licensing teams has resulted in multiple enforcement actions against private hire and taxi drivers across the region.
Led by PC Patrick Quinton, Avon and Somerset’s dedicated taxi enforcement officer, the multi-agency effort focused on vehicle safety, licence compliance, and unlawful activity in the trade. Officers from South Gloucestershire and North Somerset Councils joined the DVSA and police in carrying out checks on 59 vehicles.
The operation uncovered several serious safety issues. Four vehicles were issued with delayed Prohibition Notices for faults including brake defects, illegally tinted windows, and missing wheel nuts. One vehicle received an immediate Prohibition Notice after a tyre was found worn down to the cords. Several vehicles were suspended from service as a result.
Two cases of illegal number plates were also dealt with during the operation. Affected drivers have since replaced the plates with road-legal versions, and PC Quinton is following up to ensure all necessary repairs have been completed.
The checks also uncovered a driver working without a valid licence, who had been dispatched to a job by a Wales-based operator. The incident is now under investigation by North Somerset Council, with enforcement action against the operator being considered.
Operations like this are essential for keeping the public safe and ensuring that only compliant drivers and vehicles remain on the road. PC Quinton confirmed he would continue carrying out regular checks and supporting drivers with compliance queries and licensing concerns.
