Redbridge Council is set to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with the installation of over 170 fast chargers, thanks to an initiative undertaken in partnership with Uber.

The landmark project aims to bolster the borough's EV network, encourage greener travel choices, and support the transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to cleaner electric alternatives.

As part of this initiative, 174 fast chargers will be installed across 87 locations in Redbridge in 2024, expanding the accessibility of charging infrastructure for EV owners. The first phase of the project commenced with the appointment of Believ, who will be responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining the fast chargers.

The project's funding stems from a collaboration between Uber and Believ, with Uber aiming to support the introduction of additional fast chargers in multiple boroughs across London. By augmenting London's overall EV charging network, Uber aims to enhance charging accessibility for its drivers as well as other EV users in the city.

The first tranche of chargers are expected to be installed from early next year.

Cllr Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: “Our goal is to keep expanding Redbridge’s on-street electric vehicle charging network to make it easier for local people to switch to an electric vehicle, helping to cut air pollution and tackle climate change in the process. And this also means helping local taxi and private hire drivers in Redbridge to switch to electric vehicles too. Working in partnership with Uber and Believ to install additional on-street charge points, we’re making switching to an electric vehicle easier, with more places to charge across our borough.”

Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber in the UK, said: “We are delighted to work with Redbridge Council on this vital project to boost EV infrastructure. Drivers often tell me that being able to access reliable charging near their homes is critical to their decision to switch to an electric vehicle. By targeting investment where it is most needed, we are confident that many more drivers will make the switch to electric.”
