Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that all Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) wrongly issued to taxi drivers using the Silvertown Tunnel on 23 October will be automatically cancelled.
The update comes after a number of taxi drivers reported receiving PCNs despite being exempt from the charges.
The London Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA) initially asked members who had received fines to send in details, including the PCN number, registration, and badge number. However, it has now been confirmed that affected drivers do not need to take any further action.
According to the LTDA, TfL will cancel the fines without the need for appeals, and a formal notification will be sent to each driver involved.
The PCNs were issued because the tunnel’s camera systems failed to recognise the vehicle exemptions that apply to licensed taxis. A similar technical issue occurred earlier this year at the Blackwall Tunnel, where taxis were also wrongly fined due to system faults.
Trade sources say that any PCNs that have already been appealed will be accepted and closed by TfL. The process of sending letters to affected drivers is expected to take time.
Drivers can check the status of their PCNs directly through the TfL portal at:
By entering the PCN reference and vehicle registration, the portal should show a balance of £0 for cancelled fines. Drivers have been advised to wait until Friday before checking, to allow time for the system to update.
