A joint enforcement operation between Ribble Valley Borough Council and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) resulted in two licensed taxi and private hire vehicles being issued with delayed prohibition notices following roadside inspections.
The checks, carried out on 21 July 2026, saw officers examine a total of 10 hackney carriage and private hire vehicles operating in the borough as part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety and licensing standards.
Eight of the vehicles inspected met the required standards without issue. However, two vehicles were found to have defects significant enough to warrant delayed prohibition notices, requiring the faults to be rectified within seven days before further enforcement action would be considered.
According to the council, both vehicles were repaired on the same day as the inspections and the prohibition notices were subsequently lifted, allowing them to continue operating once the defects had been addressed.
Councillor Ian Brown, Chairman of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Licensing Committee, said: “It’s vital that vehicles used to transport people around meet the highest standards.
“The council and DVSA will continue to carry out regular inspections of licensed vehicles in the borough to help ensure standards are kept high and passengers, and drivers, are kept safe.”
Joint enforcement operations involving licensing authorities and the DVSA form part of a wider programme of compliance activity across the UK taxi and private hire industry.
Vehicle inspections typically assess mechanical roadworthiness alongside compliance with licensing conditions, helping to identify defects before they become more serious safety concerns.
The latest results demonstrate that while the majority of vehicles inspected met the required standards, routine roadside enforcement remains an important part of ensuring public confidence in licensed transport services and encouraging prompt maintenance where issues are identified.
