RISING PROBLEM: TfL issued 212 warning letters to private hire vehicles parked on London taxi ranks in 2025
Transport for London (TfL) issued 212 warning or advisory letters to private hire vehicles parked on taxi ranks in London during 2025, according to information released under the Freedom of Information Act.
The figure represents a rise of 29 letters compared with 2024, when TfL issued 183 warning or advisory letters for the same type of taxi rank misuse. That equates to an increase of almost 16%.
A further 52 letters were issued between 1 January and 30 June 2026.
The information was released in response to an FOI request published by TfL on 10 September 2026. The request asked how many warning or advisory letters had been issued to private hire vehicles parked on taxi ranks during 2024, 2025 and the first half of 2026.
TfL said warning and advisory letters were only one of a range of regulatory sanctions available in cases involving taxi rank misuse. The authority did not provide a breakdown of other enforcement action as part of the response.
The transport authority also said information from licensed taxi drivers and trade representative groups about the misuse of taxi ranks was used to help plan the deployment of compliance and enforcement officers.
Taxi ranks are intended for use by licensed hackney carriages only, while private hire vehicles must remain off ranks to avoid public confusion and allow taxi drivers to do their jobs.
