Saharan dust turns rain showers into dirty deluge, leaving cars and taxis filthy across the UK

Updated: Sep 11, 2023

Residents and cabbies across the United Kingdom have awoken this week only to find their recently washed vehicles covered in a layer of dust following an unexpected rainfall overnight.

The dirt-infused rain puzzled many, prompting them to take to social media in search of answers and share photographs of their muddied cars.

The Met Office has identified the source of the peculiar phenomenon as the Sahara desert, located predominantly in North Africa. Strong winds in the Sahara desert propel vast amounts of sand and dust particles into the atmosphere. Under specific conditions, these airborne particles can be transported by northward winds to regions as far-reaching as the UK.

As raindrops form and descend, they collect these tiny particles of Saharan dust along their journey to the ground. Consequently, when rainwater eventually evaporates from surfaces, a layer of dust remains behind, leading to the unsightly coating observed on cars, windscreens, and windows this morning.

Meteorologists affirm that occurrences of Saharan dust-triggered rain are sporadic but not uncommon. Nevertheless, the heatwave experienced in recent days, followed by a cooling period overnight, created the perfect conditions for the dust-laden rain to drench the nation's vehicles, leaving them in need of another wash.

As the weather patterns continue to shift and fluctuate, it is recommended that car owners pick wisely when considering their next round of car washes to restore their vehicles' pristine appearance.
