SENTENCED: Uber driver filmed with sex worker in licensed minicab pleads guilty at court
An Uber driver who was filmed with a sex worker in his minicab has been sentenced after footage of the incident went viral on social media.
Uber driver Mohammed Jamal, 37, has been sentenced after being caught with a sex worker in his vehicle. The incident occurred on Thames Street in Rochdale, in the early hours of Sunday 9 April.
A mobile phone recording of the event went viral on social media, appearing to show Jamal partially undressed in the back of his private hire vehicle with a female.
Following the widespread circulation of the footage, the driver was charged with soliciting another in a street or public place for the purpose of obtaining their sexual services as a prostitute.
At the time of the incident Greater Manchester Police requested that all previously circulated video footage be removed until court proceedings had concluded.
Uber released a statement at the time of incident saying: "We are horrified by what is depicted in the video and are taking action.
"We have banned the driver while we investigate and are working directly with the police."
Appearing at Tameside Magistrates' Court earlier this week, Jamal pleaded guilty to the charges against him. He was ordered to pay an £80 fine, £85 in court costs, and a £32 victim surcharge.
