Taxi and private hire drivers in Southampton have been given permission to temporarily cover or remove vehicle signage following a series of break-ins targeting licensed vehicles.
The decision follows talks between GMB Union representatives and Southampton City Council after a rise in reports of taxis and private hire vehicles being broken into while parked and not in service.
Under the temporary measure, private hire drivers can use plain magnetic panels to cover their company livery when their vehicle is unattended. Hackney carriage drivers are also allowed to remove their roof signs when the cab is parked and off duty.
The move aims to reduce the visibility of licensed vehicles as easy targets for criminals. GMB said it had pressed the council to act quickly as drivers faced mounting repair costs and disruption to work.
A GMB spokesperson said the union would continue to work with the council to support drivers and seek further steps to improve vehicle security across the city. Drivers remain concerned about protecting their vehicles and livelihoods while parked overnight or between shifts.
The council has confirmed the temporary arrangement will stay in place while it reviews potential longer-term measures to address the issue.
Ali Haydor, GMB National Taxi and Private Hire Representative, said: “We appreciate the Council’s understanding and flexibility during this challenging period.
“Our members simply want to work safely and keep their vehicles secure.
“We would remind our members these measures must only be used when the vehicle is stationary and all other policies continue to apply when the vehicle is in use.
“We hope those responsible for these break-ins are caught soon so normal regulations can return, as they are in place for a reason.”
