Taxi and private hire drivers in Birmingham could be in line for a vital £1,000 coronavirus support grant.

Birmingham City Council (BCC) are expected to announce full details of the support package in the near future.

The package comes following a drastic downturn in work levels for the industry caused by coronavirus lockdown measures.

Leader of BCC, Councillor Ian Ward, said: “We know how hard the last year has been and I hope to have an announcement soon of financial support for Birmingham’s taxi drivers.”

Councillor Majid Mahmood said via social media: “Really pleased Birmingham City Council have agreed to provide a one-off grant of £1,000 to hackney carriage and private hire drivers.

“This is very welcomed news for the trade, which has been significantly impacted by continuation of government restrictions.

“More details soon.”
