SUITABILITY GUIDANCE: IoL opens new consultation on revised taxi and private hire licensing practices

The Institute of Licensing (IoL) has launched a consultation on its draft revised 'Suitability Guidance: Guidance on determining the suitability of applicants and licensees in the taxi and private hire industry'.

This consultation runs from 10 July 2024 to 30 September 2024.

The revised guidance aims to help local licensing authorities formulate policies to assess the suitability of applicants and current licence holders in the taxi and private hire sector.

This update follows the original guidance published in April 2018, which heavily influenced the Department for Transport’s Statutory Standards for Taxi and Private Hire Licensing issued in 2020.

The review has been led by the IoL’s Suitability Guidance Working Group, chaired by solicitor Stephen Turner. Following an initial consultation in September 2022, which garnered 114 responses, the working group has incorporated the feedback into the new draft.
