SUNDAY 26 MAY 2024: Major London road closures announced for Ford RideLondon-Essex
The Ford RideLondon-Essex is set to return on Sunday 26 May, bringing with it significant road closures across central London, east London, and Essex. The event, featuring 100, 60, and 30-mile rides, attracts up to 25,000 cyclists.
Road Closures and Disruptions
Expect extensive road closures and delays until 21:00, especially on key routes such as the A12 around the Blackwall Tunnel, A13, and A406.
The event's 2024 route remains largely unchanged from 2023, but there is a notable diversion due to an unsafe bridge on Broadmead Road in Woodford. Cyclists will now divert from Grange Hill towards Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill before re-joining the route at High Road, Woodford Green. Additional vehicle crossing points will be available in Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.
Central London
In central London, road closures will affect St James’s Park and Green Park from 06:00 to 18:00. Boroughs such as Camden, Lambeth, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Westminster, and the City of London will also see closures for most of the day.
Major bridges, including Southwark Bridge, Tower Bridge, and Westminster Bridge, will be closed from 04:00 to 19:30, while Waterloo Bridge will be closed from 08:00 to 19:30.
Alternative crossings include Blackfriars Bridge, London Bridge, and the Rotherhithe Tunnel, though vehicle restrictions apply. Public transport is recommended.
East London
In east London, the A12 northbound will be closed from 04:00 to 12:00, affecting Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, and Hackney. Southbound closures will last from 04:00 to 18:30.
For those travelling on 26 May, planning ahead and seeking alternative routes is essential to avoid delays. Full details of road closures are available online.
