A taxi driver has been recognised for his service to the community after taking an injured person to hospital while alerting medical staff and other road users to the emergency.
Abdul Kadir Moalin received the Waley-Cohen Award for “the performance of meritorious service in support of law and order” in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area.
The certificate was presented in recognition of Moalin’s actions both as a taxi driver and for his subsequent assistance with a Major Crime Investigation Team inquiry.
Details accompanying the award state that an injured person entered Moalin’s taxi in 2024. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, he drove the passenger to hospital, where medical staff attempted to save the individual’s life.
The award citation said Moalin carefully navigated traffic while alerting other road users to the emergency as he made his way to hospital.
Moalin also works for the council assisting people with learning disabilities. According to the information accompanying the award, his vehicle was later seized as part of an investigation by the Major Crime Investigation Team.
The seizure was said to have had a “significant impact” on Moalin, his family and his community. Despite those consequences, the citation said he remained committed to supporting the police investigation.
PC Patrick Quinton, of Avon and Somerset Police, shared details of the recognition as part of his work supporting local drivers.
Quinton said: “As you know, this week I’m highlighting the support I offer to drivers and the good work done by them. So today I’m pleased to share the award given to locally licensed driver Mr Abdul Moalin.”
The recognition provides context of the wider role licensed taxi drivers can play within their communities. Drivers routinely work across public spaces and late-night economies, putting them in positions where they can encounter emergencies, vulnerable passengers and incidents requiring police or medical assistance.
