Taxi drivers and motorists reminded to check for cats under cars as temperatures fall

Motorists are being asked to take extra care this autumn by checking under and around their vehicles for cats seeking shelter.
As colder weather sets in, cats often curl up in wheel wells and engine bays to escape the rain and low temperatures. While the behaviour is common, it can place animals at serious risk if the vehicle is started without checks being made.
Motoring experts at LeaseLoco.com are urging drivers to carry out simple steps before pulling away. A walk around the vehicle to check the tyres and wheel arches can help spot resting cats. Knocking on the bonnet can also encourage any animals in the engine bay to move to safety.
John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco.com, said: “We’ve all seen cats curled up under cars from time to time, and there’s a good reason for it. They’re often looking for warm shelter as the weather gets colder. The wheel well and engine bay aren’t exactly the safest spots, especially if the engine is started up.”
Wilmot added: “As it gets colder, it’s worth having a quick check for cats hiding under your car, particularly in the mornings. If you see one perched up on your wheel, just give it a moment to get out. If a cat is hiding in your engine bay, take a moment to knock on the bonnet as the noise will usually encourage them to leave.”
Drivers who suspect a cat may be trapped are advised to remain calm and not attempt to pull it free, as frightened animals may lash out. Placing food nearby may encourage them to move, but if the cat appears stuck, contacting the RSPCA or a local welfare group is recommended.
The reminder comes as part of seasonal safety advice for drivers, with checks expected to reduce avoidable harm to pets during the colder months.
