Taxi fares across East Dunbartonshire will rise following a decision by the local council, despite concerns over the low level of public engagement during the consultation process.
The approved changes include a 6% increase in the minimum fare, now set at £3.50. Additionally, the charge for journeys to and from Glasgow Airport has gone up to £6. These increases were passed unanimously by the council’s policy and resources committee.
The council ran a public consultation from February to April, using local press, its website and social media to publicise the proposals. Only nine responses were received. Of those, three came from people in the taxi trade. Eight supported fare increases, and seven backed higher rises than those proposed. One respondent suggested a 10% or greater increase.
Taxi operators pointed to the high cost of recalibrating meters after fare changes, as well as ongoing vehicle and insurance expenses. Councillors acknowledged the arguments in favour of the increase but voiced disappointment at the lack of wider public input. They noted that many people rely on local taxi services, yet few took part in the consultation.
The fare rise will take effect following the necessary changes to meters and signage.
