Taxi passengers pull out machete and threaten driver during frightening Swindon robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses to an armed robbery which occurred in Swindon on Sunday 1 March.

At approximately 10.45pm, two men were travelling in a taxi along Corporation Street when they pulled out what is believed to be a machete and threatened the driver.

They stole approximately £40 cash from the driver and then got out of the vehicle before getting into another car which was travelling behind the taxi – believed to be a dark coloured Fiat Punto.

The Fiat was seen to drive off towards the Transfer Bridges.

Det Sgt Justin Downes said: “This was understandably very frightening for the driver and fortunately he wasn’t injured but was incredibly shaken up.

“We are really keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help – maybe you were driving in the area at the time and may have captured footage on a dash cam which could help. Please get in touch with any information by calling 101.”

One of the men is described as being of a big build and with a beard, while the second man is believed to have been wearing a hooded top.

Anyone with information is being urged to call 101 and quote crime reference number 54200021707. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
