After Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the regulatory process for converting Euro 5 TX4 taxis to Euro 6 emissions standards, HJS Emissions have begun accepting orders for the conversion programme.
In a statement issued to the taxi industry, HJS Emissions said it had received formal clarity from TfL on how converted vehicles will be treated within the capital’s taxi licensing regime. The guidance applies to Euro 5 TX4 taxi vehicles currently licensed as London taxis.
TfL has confirmed that all Euro 5 TX4 cabs with taxi plates expiring after 18 December 2025 will be permitted to undergo conversion. Where a plate has already expired, the vehicle will be allowed to return to service once the conversion is completed, although ordering a conversion will not extend the validity of an expired plate.
Converted vehicles will be inspected as part of routine NSL compliance checks. Once approved, a converted Euro 5 TX4 will be eligible to remain licensed until it reaches the maximum age limit of 15 years, aligning it with other Euro 6 compliant taxis.
Clarification from Transport for London allows eligible Euro 5 TX4 taxis to be converted to Euro 6 and remain licensed up to 15 years
Following the clarification, HJS said it is now proceeding with orders for the conversion, with the first complete kits expected to be available by the end of February 2026. Priority will be given to vehicles with earlier plate expiry dates, in an effort to minimise time off the road for drivers and owners.
Installation will be carried out by Cricklewood Cab Company, which will also manage deposits, pre-installation checks and final certification. The total cost of the conversion is £7,950 plus VAT, with a 25 percent deposit required upfront.
As part of the process, TfL will be notified once a conversion is ordered and again after installation is completed, using the installation certificate as evidence that the vehicle meets the Euro 6 emissions requirement. This confirmation secures the cab’s eligibility to continue operating within London’s taxi fleet until it reaches the age limit.
The confirmation process is expected to provide greater certainty for TX4 taxi owners weighing the cost of conversion against vehicle replacement.
