Transport for London (TfL) has reminded licensed taxi and private hire vehicle drivers to take extra precautions during the current spell of hot weather, with temperatures forecast to exceed 30C across the capital.
In a message sent to London licensees, TfL advised drivers to prioritise both their own wellbeing and the safety of passengers by taking regular breaks, drinking plenty of water and carrying out routine vehicle checks before and during shifts.
The regulator said: “With temperatures exceeding 30ºC, we want to remind licensees to take sensible steps to keep both yourselves and your passengers safe.”
TfL also encouraged drivers to inspect key vehicle components to reduce the risk of heat-related mechanical issues. The guidance includes ensuring windscreens remain clear and unobstructed, regularly checking tyre pressures, monitoring engine oil and coolant levels, and making sure windscreen wipers and washer fluid are in good working order.
The advice comes as prolonged periods of high temperatures can increase strain on vehicles, particularly tyres and cooling systems, while also raising the risk of dehydration and fatigue for drivers working long hours.
Taxi and private hire operators may also experience increased passenger demand during warm weather, making vehicle reliability and driver welfare particularly important.
The reminder forms part of TfL’s routine safety messaging during periods of extreme weather, encouraging London’s licensed taxi and private hire trade to minimise disruption and continue providing safe transport services throughout the heatwave.
