A London MP has intervened to help a taxi driver return to work after experiencing repeated delays in renewing his licence with Transport for London (TfL).
Deirdre Costigan confirmed she contacted TfL directly after being approached by the driver, whose ability to operate had been affected while awaiting the outcome of his licence renewal application. Licensing delays have remained a concern among drivers, with some reporting extended processing times impacting their income.
Costigan said the issue was resolved following her involvement, allowing the driver to resume work. “I’m here to help you! After a local taxi driver faced repeated delays renewing his licence, I spoke to TfL to fix the problem, meaning he could go back to work,” she said.
The case highlights ongoing operational pressures within TfL’s licensing system, which processes applications for both taxi and private hire drivers across the capital. Industry stakeholders have previously raised concerns about turnaround times, particularly where drivers are unable to continue working while awaiting approval.
Costigan encouraged other drivers facing similar issues to come forward. “If you are struggling with an issue, please get in touch,” she added, signalling a willingness among MPs to support constituents dealing with regulatory or administrative challenges.
The intervention comes amid wider scrutiny of licensing processes and driver support in London, with industry bodies continuing to call for clearer timelines and contingency arrangements to minimise disruption to drivers’ livelihoods.
