TfL urge taxi drivers to brace themselves for Notting Hill demand

Updated: Aug 27

As the Notting Hill Carnival returns this August Bank Holiday weekend, London is gearing up for a significant surge in transport demand. With more than two million people anticipated to converge on west London, the city’s transport network is expected to face considerable pressure.

In an emailed newsletter to cabbies, Transport for London (TfL) emphasised the crucial role that taxi and private hire services will play during the celebrations. Drivers have been encouraged to assist with the expected influx of passengers, both to and from the event.

The Carnival, a vibrant celebration of London’s Caribbean community, will span two days, Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August.

There will be significant roads closures in the area from 6am on Sunday, 25 August until 6am on Tuesday 27 August in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and in Westminster.

The festivities, however, will kick off a day earlier with the UK National Panorama Steel Band competition at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park on Saturday 24 August. Running from 11am to 11.30pm, the event is set to draw large crowds.

Taxi drivers, in particular, should prepare for a busy weekend, as the Carnival’s popularity means that transport options will be stretched.

For those working over the weekend, awareness of road closures and increased traffic in the area will be vital in navigating the challenges posed by the Carnival crowds.
