Two private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers pleaded guilty to charges of plying for hire and having no insurance in Telford.
The drivers were fined more than £1,000 each by Telford & Wrekin Council after they were caught by the council's enforcement team during an operation.
As per the law, plying-for-hire means accepting passengers who have not pre-booked with a private hire operator. This renders the PHV insurance invalid and could lead to potential safety risks for passengers. Despite being licensed by another council, the two drivers illegally picked up fares in Telford and Wrekin.
Following their guilty plea, the drivers were ordered to pay a fine of £1,135 each. Moreover, their PHV licences were suspended and they were handed six penalty points on their driving licences.
According to the Shropshire Star, a spokesperson for Telford & Wrekin Council said: "The case shows we are continuing to crack down on taxi drivers who break the law and put passengers at risk."
