The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) has opened its 2026 Global Taxi and Ride-hailing Survey, inviting regulators and operators worldwide to contribute to what it describes as a key international benchmark of the sector’s development.

The biennial study will underpin the second edition of the UITP Insights report, “Global Taxi and Ride-hailing Figures 2026”, due for publication in the second half of 2026. The findings will also feed into an updated global dataset covering operational, regulatory and market indicators.

UITP said the survey is primarily aimed at public authorities responsible for regulating taxi and ride-hailing services. National authorities completing the questionnaire on behalf of a major city or capital are also encouraged to participate. Taxi operators and ride-hailing or transport network companies are invited to contribute qualitative insights to support the broader analysis.

The questionnaire is expected to take between 20 and 30 minutes to complete, with submissions closing on 13 April 2026. The survey is hosted online via a dedicated Qualtrics platform.

Biennial benchmark will inform global dataset and policy analysis on regulation, fleet trends and market structure

The data collected will provide a consolidated view of trends across cities and regions, including regulatory frameworks, market structure, fleet composition and operational performance. It will also examine integration with public transport systems and assess the sector’s future outlook.

For transport authorities and operators, the results could serve as a reference point for benchmarking performance and policy direction against international peers. In recent years, the rapid expansion of ride-hailing platforms alongside traditional taxi markets has prompted significant regulatory reform in multiple jurisdictions, with cities reassessing licensing models, vehicle standards and data-sharing requirements.

The updated dataset is expected to provide comparative insights into how different regulatory approaches affect fleet electrification, service availability and modal integration. This may be of particular relevance to cities seeking to align taxi and private hire operations with wider decarbonisation targets and public transport strategies.

The launch comes at a time when policymakers across Europe, North America and parts of Asia are reviewing the role of app-based transport services within urban mobility ecosystems. Data from the survey will likely inform discussions around market concentration, labour models and the balance between innovation and regulatory oversight.

Submissions can be made via the official online link, with UITP urging eligible authorities and operators to contribute ahead of the April deadline to ensure comprehensive global coverage.
