Wantage taxi drivers' concern over proposed 20mph speed limits that will likely increase travel time

Updated: Jul 16, 2023

Taxi drivers in Wantage have expressed concerns over the proposed introduction of 20mph speed limits in certain areas of the town. They argue that these restrictions will lead to increased journey times for both taxi drivers and the public.

Oxfordshire County Council has put forward these speed limit changes as part of its effort to create safer and more appealing built environments for pedestrians and cyclists. By promoting alternative modes of transport for local travel, the council aims to improve road safety and encourage healthier active lifestyles.

The council is seeking public feedback on the proposal, which suggests replacing the majority of the existing 30mph speed limit with a new 20mph limit throughout Wantage. The decision to propose these changes was prompted by the Town council, who raised concerns about road safety in the area.

However, it is worth noting that sections of the current 30mph speed limit will still be maintained as buffer zones on certain roads leading into the town. These roads include A338 Grove Road, A338 Manor Road, A417 Challow Road, A417 Reading Road, B4494 Chain Hill Road, B4507 Ickleton Road, and Denchworth Road. The council has taken into account the road environment and traffic usage when determining these areas.

According to the Oxford Mail, a taxi driver from Grove Cabs expressed their discontent with the proposed speed limits, stating that many of them are unnecessary. They argued that motorists are often being punished for reasons that may not always be justified. While they acknowledged the importance of 20mph limits in appropriate areas, they believe that scattering them all over the town will have a detrimental impact on journey times.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to provide their input on the proposal by completing and returning the response form by Friday, July 28, 2023. More details about how the council plans to implement the 20mph speed limits in Oxfordshire communities can be found on their website.
