Waze warnings fail to stop police as 55 traffic offences are recorded during Oxford road safety blitz

Police carrying out a road safety operation across Oxford issued 55 Traffic Offence Reports after targeting driving behaviour considered to put other road users at risk.
Thames Valley Police Roads Policing said its Roads Policing Tasking Team worked alongside B Shift officers during the operation. Mobile phone and seatbelt offences accounted for the majority of enforcement action.
Officers recorded 23 seatbelt offences and 16 cases of motorists using a mobile phone while driving. A further five motorists were reported for not being in proper control of a vehicle.
Other offences included two cases of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, two number plate offences, three vehicles with illegal window tints, one vehicle without a valid MOT and one case involving no insurance. Police also reported a supervising driver for using a mobile phone.
One case involved passengers allegedly being carried in a manner likely to cause danger, with police reporting that a child was being carried on a lap.
Four vehicles were also seized during the operation. Police said two untaxed vehicles and an e-scooter were seized, while another vehicle was taken under Section 165 powers for having no insurance.
The force also revealed that one motorist was caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel twice during the same operation, with the two incidents occurring around two hours apart.
The operation attracted attention from motorists using the Waze navigation app, where users can report the location of police. Thames Valley Police said the alerts did not prevent officers from detecting offences.
TVP Roads Policing said: “We would like to say thank you to all those who notified Waze of our location and highlight how this did not affect us doing our job or how many people still don’t pay attention when driving. WE STILL GOT THEM!!!!!”
