Who makes the London black taxi? Where is it made and what is their history in the industry?

London's black taxis, known for their distinctive shape and iconic presence on the streets, have long been a symbol of the city's transportation heritage. Today, we explore the manufacturers behind these celebrated vehicles and their rich history in the industry.

The London black taxi is manufactured by a company called The London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), formerly known as the London Taxi Company. Founded in 1899, LEVC has played a pivotal role in shaping the taxi industry landscape throughout the years. The company's headquarters is situated in Coventry, a city located in the West Midlands region of England.

LEVC has a remarkable history in the industry, evolving over more than a century to meet the changing demands of transportation in London. Initially, the company focused on building traditional diesel-powered taxis. However, in recent years, LEVC has shifted its focus towards producing electric and hybrid vehicles, symbolising the industry’s overall commitment to eco-friendly transportation solutions.

One of the most significant developments in LEVC's history came in 2017 when it introduced the all-new, fully electric black taxi called the TX. This revolutionised the iconic vehicle by making it zero-emission, ensuring a sustainable future for the London taxi fleet. The TX's distinctive design, incorporating state-of-the-art technology, instantly became a favourite with both drivers who bought one and passengers who rode in them.

The LEVC plant in Coventry is a hub of innovation and production, where skilled engineers and craftsmen bring the black taxi to life. The facility boasts cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities, combining traditional handcrafted techniques with modern technology. Each vehicle undergoes rigorous testing and quality checks to ensure it meets the highest standards of safety and durability.

Over the years, LEVC has not only become a leading manufacturer of London black taxis but has also spread its wings internationally and also now produce a commercial van. The company's vehicles are exported to various cities around the world, enabling passengers in other countries to experience the comfort and reliability of these iconic taxis.
