Why can’t London’s black taxis attach flags to their vehicles during big sporting events?
In the midst of major sporting events, London’s iconic black taxis remain flagless, much to the dismay of patriotic drivers.
This issue recently resurfaced when London Assembly Member, Alessandro Georgiou, questioned the Mayor of London about the prohibition of displaying the England flag on these vehicles, especially after the European Championship controversy.
The Mayor emphasised that Transport for London prioritises safety. Items attached to taxis, such as flags, could potentially detach and fall onto the road, posing hazards. Additionally, these items could distract both drivers and other road users.
The policy extends beyond flags to other forms of non-official signage. Transport for London’s regulations ensure that taxis and maintain a professional and uniform appearance. This consistency helps passengers easily identify the licensed vehicles.
While some drivers and passengers may feel that the ban dampens the mood during major events, especially during major sports events like the Olympic Games, World Cup or the European Championship, the overarching goal from City Hall is public safety.
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said: “Taxis and private hire vehicles are licensed vehicles and are only allowed to display official signage their vehicles. This is a long-standing policy and has been in place for taxis and private hire vehicles for decades.
“Transport for London should consider safety and whether items displayed in or on taxis could detach and fall into the roadway or be a distraction to vehicle occupants or other road users.“
