A private hire vehicle licensed by City of Wolverhampton Council has had its licence suspended after compliance officers identified a dangerously worn tyre while the vehicle was operating in Manchester city centre on Friday night.
The defect was discovered during routine checks by Wolverhampton Public Protection officers, who shared images of the tyre showing extensive wear and visible structural damage. The authority confirmed the vehicle was immediately suspended from service on safety grounds.
Although licensed by Wolverhampton, the vehicle was operating outside its home authority area, reflecting the continued use of cross-border working in the private hire sector. Under current licensing rules, enforcement responsibility remains with the issuing authority, regardless of where the vehicle is operating.
Tyre condition is a frequent cause of enforcement action across the taxi and private hire industry. Vehicles found to be unsafe can be suspended or revoked without notice.

A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said: “Compliance found this tyre on a City of Wolverhampton Council PHV in Manchester City Centre on Friday night. PHV licence suspended!
“Drivers, CHECK YOUR TYRES! Everyone, including you, want to #ArriveAlive #GetHomeSafe.”
