City of Wolverhampton Council licensing officers have completed their latest round of compliance checks at Sheffield train station, confirming all vehicles inspected were roadworthy and fully licensed.
Officers were on site to check drivers and vehicles operating under Wolverhampton-issued private hire licences. A spokesperson for the council said the checks showed a 100% compliance rate.
The reason for Wolverhampton officers operating in South Yorkshire lies in the rules surrounding cross border hire. Private hire drivers are legally permitted to pick up passengers in any part of England, as long as the booking was made through an operator licensed in the same area as the driver and vehicle.
This means drivers licensed by Wolverhampton Council can work across the country, including in cities such as Sheffield, if they are booked via a Wolverhampton-licensed operator. The council retains responsibility for the safety and condition of those drivers and vehicles, even when they are working far from the city.
To manage this, compliance teams regularly travel across the UK to carry out inspections where their licence holders are known to operate. These inspections check vehicle safety, insurance, licensing documentation and driver conduct. They form part of ongoing enforcement efforts to ensure public safety wherever licensed drivers work.
Such practices have become more common in recent years as some drivers apply for licences in local authority areas with quicker processing times or different requirements, but still operate in major cities outside those areas.
A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said: “Compliance Officers have been working at Sheffield train station today, carrying out checks on City of Wolverhampton Council drivers and vehicles. Pleased to report all 100% compliant and roadworthy.”
