A joint operation by City of Wolverhampton Council Compliance officers and Greater Manchester Police Traffic has found “high” levels of compliance among private hire vehicles operating in Greater Manchester.
Officers checked 16 private hire vehicles licensed by Wolverhampton Council during the operation. Only one vehicle was suspended from service due to an engine management fault and a defective rear brake light.
A council spokesperson said the condition of the vehicles inspected was generally good. They also reminded drivers to ensure their badges are worn and visible at all times.
The checks are part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety standards in the private hire sector. Out of area checks are required to ensure that private hire vehicles licensed by one council but operating elsewhere meet safety and compliance standards in the areas where they work.
As licensed drivers can operate across council boundaries, local authorities and police forces carry out joint checks to make sure vehicles are roadworthy, insured, and that drivers follow licence conditions such as displaying badges.
A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said: “Last night, Compliance worked with Greater Manchester Police Traffic across Greater Manchester.
“16 City of Wolverhampton Council PHVs checked, 1 PHV suspended due to an engine management fault and a defective rear brake light.
“The compliance of the vehicles was high but drivers, wear your badges!”
