Wolverhampton taxi compliance team takes Get Home Safe campaign to university students
Council officers have explained the difference between taxis and private hire vehicles during a passenger safety event at the University of Wolverhampton.
City of Wolverhampton Council’s Taxi Compliance team has taken its Get Home Safe campaign to students at the University of Wolverhampton.
Officers attended the university to provide safety information and explain the checks passengers should make before entering a licensed vehicle, including looking at the vehicle licence plate and the driver’s badge.
A central part of the campaign is helping passengers understand the difference between taxis and private hire vehicles. Taxis can be hailed in the street or hired from a rank, while private hire vehicles must be booked in advance through a licensed operator.
That difference is important to the travelling public because an advance booking creates a journey record linking the passenger to the operator, driver and vehicle. A private hire driver should not accept an unbooked passenger who approaches the vehicle in the street.
The campaign is particularly relevant to students and other late-night passengers who may enter the first available vehicle without checking whether it is licensed or properly booked.
