Oxford Street takes another step toward pedestrianisation

The pedestrianisation of Oxford Street took another step closer today, as it was revealed that two thirds of those responding to a consultation surrounding London's most famous shopping street gave the controversial proposals the thumbs up.

Transport for London have said that a total of 22,071 people have responded to its consultation on the project,  of which 66% approved the Mayor and Wesrminster Councils plans for the area, whilst there was a 33% rejection of the proposals.

The proposals include pedestrianising Oxford Street between Oxford Circus and Orchard Street as well as banning cycles from the area.

If plans are approved, work will begin in the summer,  with a completion time of December 2018.

The plans have come under fire from the taxi industry,  who have grave concerns about the proposals given that there are also plans to exclude taxis from Tottenham Court Road. There is serious concern that the surrounding area will become gridlocked.
