Cabbie gets suspended prison sentence for using dead mans details to evade motoring fines

Steve Kenton

A Nottinghamshire cabbie has received a suspended prison sentence after using a dead mans details to evade two motoring fines.

Ali Dayani, 29, of Glamis Road, Basford, twice gave the dead mans details, when responding to notices of intent of prosecute letters issued by police.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that he received the notices for a speeding offence and for triggering a red light camera in April and May of last year.

Dayani's Toyota Yaris was caught on a red traffic light camera on April 15 in Radford Boulevard. He was then caught on a speed camera driving a white Mercedes at 47mph in a 30mph zone.

When police contacted the dead mans family about the two offences, it came to light that the named driver had died months earlier. This led to the subsequent arrest and prosecution of Dayani for perverting the course of justice.

The cabbie was remanded in custody for several days before appearing in court on March 1.

Dayani was told by Judge Steven Coupland that perverting the course of justice was a serious offence generally results in a custodial sentence.

The judge handed down a two month consecutive sentence on each charge, suspended for 12 months, as well as a one month driving disqualification.
