Taxi driver who faced multiple complaints of speeding and overcharging loses court battle to win bac

A Plymouth taxi driver who had his licence revoked following a number of complaints from passengers, has lost his court battle to win back his licence. Hackney carriage driver, Kenan Aktas, 40, was accused of speeding through the town's built-up area on a number of occasions and also had several complaints of overcharging passengers.

Following numerous allegations, Plymouth City Council stripped Aktas of his licence, with the right to appeal.

His appeal went to magistrates but they upheld the taxi licensing committee’s decision. Aktas took his appeal to the crown court but faced the same outcome – which now means the revocation of his licence is final.  He must now also pay the council’s full costs in fighting this case, of £3,223. As reported in the Plymouth Live, Recorder Mr Andrew Langdon, sitting with two magistrates fresh to the case, ruled that his driving had been poor. The judge said that, applying the test of a “safe and suitable” driver, the council was right to revoke Atkas’ licence. Councillor Sally Haydon, the Cabinet Member for Customer Focus and Community Safety said: “This is a very good result and gives confidence that the decisions made by members are the right decisions when it comes to the council’s main aim which is protecting the public. “Taxis are a vital component of the public transport system that provides a door-to-door service which is relied upon by a significant number of users. “We therefore want to ensure all of our drivers and vehicle owners are complying with the law and are providing a safe and comfortable journey.”
