14 year old boy left fighting for his life after second major e-scooter accident in under 48 hours

A 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after becoming the second major e-scooter casualty in London within 48 Hours.

Road safety campaigners are now calling for a crackdown on the scooters, which are illegal to use on public roads in the UK, after the latest accident which happened in Beckenham.

The boy is believed to have lost control of the vehicle whilst riding it on the pavement, subsequently colliding with a bus stop.

The incident, which occured in Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, at 11.42am on Saturday 13 July according to the Evening Standard, left the boy with a serious head injury. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The latest e-scooter accident comes on the back of an accident the previous day which left TV presenter Emily Hartridge fatally wounded after colliding with a lorry in Battersea.

Nick Lloyd, head of road safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: “While there has only been one death in the UK there have been a number across Europe.”

Electric scooters, which can travel up to speeds of 40mph are illegal to use on the public highway in the UK. Using one can leave the rider with a £300 fine and six points on their driving licence.
