Aberdeen Council proposes new taxi fare scale following trade input

Updated: Sep 23

Aberdeen City Council's Licensing Sub Committee has set out a new proposed taxi fare structure, following a meeting on 30 August 2024. The fare scale, which sets the maximum allowable charges for taxi journeys, was drawn up after considering feedback from the local taxi trade.

The proposed fare scale includes separate rates for standard journeys, late-night travel, and trips during the festive season.

For the first 880 yards, fares are set at £3.00 for standard trips, rising to £4.30 for late-night journeys and £4.60 during the festive period. Beyond that, each additional 1/11th of a mile will cost £0.22 under standard and late-night rates, with a festive rate of £0.33.

Late-night rates will apply from 10pm to 6am, Monday to Thursday, and throughout the weekend from 6pm on Friday until 6am on Monday. Public holidays including the 3 January, Good Friday, and May Day will also fall under this rate.

The festive season rate will be in effect from the evening of 24 December through to 6am on 27 December, and again from 6pm on New Year's Eve to 6am on 3 January. This rate will also apply to December weekends.

Waiting time charges remain set at £0.11 per 10 seconds, and there is a 50% surcharge for taxis carrying more than four passengers. A booking fee of £0.50 will be added to all pre-arranged rides, and any airport-related charges will be passed on to passengers.

The new fare structure also allows drivers to impose a maximum £100 charge if a passenger creates an "unacceptable mess" in the vehicle.
