Two people remain in police custody after a taxi driver was assaulted and robbed in the early hours of this morning in Newcastle.
Police said officers were called shortly after midnight following multiple 999 reports of a disturbance on Roman Avenue in the Walker area of the city. When officers arrived, they found a taxi driver injured in the road after being threatened and assaulted by passengers.
The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries. These included a broken nose and a suspected broken jaw. Police said he was left shaken by the incident.
According to officers, three people had been travelling in the taxi before turning on the driver. The suspects fled the scene before police arrived, making off with the driver’s cash takings.
Armed with descriptions provided by the victim and witnesses, firearms and response officers were deployed across nearby streets to search for those involved.
A short time later, officers spotted a man and a woman on Fossway in Byker. After a brief foot chase, both were detained and found in possession of a quantity of coins believed to have been stolen during the robbery.
A 36 year old woman and a 46 year old man were arrested on suspicion of robbery. Both remain in police custody while enquiries continue.
Police are continuing efforts to locate a third suspect and are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around Roman Avenue and Fossway during the early hours to come forward.
