Barnsley taxis fitted with latest CCTV system: What the cameras and technology will include

Barnsley taxis and private hire vehicles are being fitted with new CCTV systems in a move to improve safety across the town’s transport network. The systems are being supplied and installed by ACSS following a partnership with Barnsley Council.

Each installation is tailored to meet the council’s requirements. The technology aims to provide added protection for both drivers and passengers, while also helping to tackle incidents involving false claims and anti-social behaviour.

Vehicles can be fitted with up to four high-definition cameras. These cover the front, interior and rear of the taxi, allowing full visual coverage. All footage is encrypted using AES-256 and stored securely in the vehicle’s boot.

A privacy switch allows drivers to disable recording when the vehicle is being used for personal journeys. This ensures that only work-related journeys are captured. Data is only recorded while the vehicle is in use, helping to maintain compliance with data protection laws.

Access to recorded footage is controlled by Barnsley Council. Drivers can request specific recordings by submitting the time and date of any incident. The footage can then be retrieved for review.

ACSS say the cameras are a strong deterrent to crime and a tool for evidence gathering. Drivers working during night shifts or in higher-risk areas are expected to benefit from the added peace of mind.

The rollout of the new CCTV systems is underway, with installations planned over the coming months. The systems are designed to be easy to use, and drivers can access training support if required.

ACSS has over 20 years’ experience in the vehicle security industry, supporting commercial fleets across the UK. Their team provides remote installation to reduce vehicle downtime.

Alasdair Graham, ACSS Technical Manager, said: “We’re excited to be part of Barnsley’s safety initiative. Our CCTV system is built to keep both drivers and passengers safe, while also respecting privacy. With our in-house support team on hand, we ensure drivers receive ongoing assistance to keep the system running smoothly.”
