Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) carried out spot checks on taxi and private hire vehicles in Central Bristol last Wednesday, uncovering a series of safety and compliance issues.
According to PC Patrick Quinton, Taxi Cop for Avon and Somerset Police, a total of 35 vehicles were inspected during the operation. Five were issued with notices for minor faults, while two were immediately taken off the road for more serious problems.
One of the suspended vehicles was found to have an illegal tyre, while another was missing wheel nuts, making it unsafe to continue in service. In addition, a member of the public was fined for illegally using the bus and taxi lane and issued a further £100 penalty for displaying illegal number plates.
The enforcement checks form part of ongoing joint work between the police and DVSA aimed at maintaining public safety and ensuring taxi and private hire vehicles operating in the area meet the required standards.
PC Quinton said: “Last Wednesday morning I worked with DVSA and we checked 35 vehicles in Central Bristol. Of those, 5 were given notices for minor issues. 2 were immediately taken out of service for an illegal tyre and missing wheel nuts. 1 member of the public used the bus/taxi lane and got a fine for that plus another £100 for illegal number plates.“
