Driver safety was a key topic during the latest meeting between GMB and Uber, with the union urging the ride-hailing platform to strengthen protections for drivers working in increasingly challenging situations.

In an update to members following the meeting, GMB said feedback from drivers had highlighted concerns around personal safety, support during public disorder, discrimination and unsafe pick-up and drop-off locations.

The union said one of the main issues discussed was the level of support available to drivers during riots, civil disturbances and other potentially dangerous incidents. GMB argued that drivers need clearer guidance from Uber when deciding whether it is safe to continue working during exceptional events.

In its update, the union said: “Members have raised concerns about lack of support during riots, disturbances, and other unsafe situations. Drivers need clear guidance and appropriate protection from Uber when working in challenging environments.”

The issue reflects wider concerns across the private hire industry, where drivers often work alone for extended periods and can face rapidly changing situations, particularly during large-scale public events or periods of civil unrest.

GMB also used the meeting to encourage Uber to back its ‘No Place for Racism’ campaign. The union said drivers continue to experience racism and discrimination while working on the platform and called for stronger measures to ensure they feel protected.

The update stated: “GMB has encouraged Uber to support our ‘No Place for Racism’ campaign. Drivers need to feel safe and respected while working on the platform.”

Unsafe pick-up and drop-off locations formed another part of the discussions. According to GMB, drivers continue to report being directed to locations that increase safety risks or create difficult traffic situations. The union said these locations can also result in complaints from passengers when drivers are unable to stop exactly where the app directs.

GMB said: “Drivers continue to report issues with unsafe locations, which can increase risks and lead to unfair complaints. Uber should review these areas and provide better support for drivers.”

The safety discussions formed part of a broader agenda covering driver earnings, vehicle categories, app functionality and operational improvements. GMB said the issues raised reflected feedback received directly from members and would continue to be discussed with Uber as part of its ongoing engagement with the platform.
