Cardiff Taxi and PHV drivers secure automatic 6 month extensions for vehicles over 10 years old

Unite the Union Wales have announced, in what they describe as a "vital win", that they have secured automatic six month extensions for taxi and private hire vehicles over ten-years-old.

The news comes as Unions around the UK seek ways of helping taxi and private hire drivers struggling during COVID-19.

With travel at a very minimum, the transport industry has taken a massive hit, prompting calls for licensing authorities to reconsider and ease some of the vehicle and driver licensing rules put in place pre-COVID-19 pandemic to help drivers during such financial hardship.

As well as vehicle extensions, Cardiff Council have agreed to extend driver's licences (badges) for the same six month period.

Announcing the news, Unite Union Wales thanked the Leader of Cardiff Council, Huw Thomas, and Councillor Norma Mackie for their support.

A spokesperson for the Union, said via their Twitter account: "A vital win for our @HackneyCardiff members, securing automatic 6 month extensions for vehicles, badges & taxis/phv over 10 years old.

"Brilliant work from @2000jama and thanks to @Huwthomas_Wales & @norman123 for their support, collectively looking after the trade in hard times."
