Coventry taxi fare increase moves forward after Unite proposal

Coventry taxi passengers face higher journey costs after councillors approved a fare proposal requested by Unite for statutory advertisement.
The tariff remains subject to a 14-day public objection period before it can be confirmed.
The distance included within the starting fare would fall from 0.922km to 0.76km, while the initial waiting time would reduce from 4.5 minutes to 3.7 minutes. The changes mean meters would reach the next charging increment sooner.
Starting fares would remain at £3.80 for daytime journeys between 6am and 10pm, £4.60 between 10pm and 6am, and £4.90 on public holidays. After the initial threshold, each additional 0.162km or 48 seconds of waiting would cost 30p during day and night tariffs, or 35p on public holidays.
The council said the adjustment “would retain the existing start fares but reduce the initial distance and time covered by those fares, resulting in fares moving to the next increment sooner.”
Any objections will be considered by Cabinet Member for City Services Councillor Patricia Hetherton at a meeting scheduled for 15 September 2026 before a final decision is made. Hetherton’s council responsibilities include oversight of City Services.
