CROSS BORDER: Wolverhampton Council reveals compliance results for Manchester operation
Updated: Dec 1, 2024
City of Wolverhampton Council has confirmed the results of a recent compliance operation involving private hire vehicles in Greater Manchester via a Freedom of Information request response.
The operation, conducted on 18 October 2024, involved the inspection of 75 Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles.
The findings showed high compliance levels. Of the vehicles inspected, 73 were deemed fully compliant with licensing regulations. However, two vehicles received defect notices due to issues with the display of rear private hire plates.
Additionally, 18 drivers were advised on the proper wearing or display of their photo identity badges.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain high standards for private hire vehicles operating beyond Wolverhampton’s borders. Compliance checks such as this ensure both passenger safety and adherence to licensing rules.
Out-of-area licensing checks occur to ensure that private hire vehicles and drivers operating outside their licensing authority comply with the rules and standards set by their home council. These inspections are crucial for several reasons.
Firstly, they address public safety concerns. Local authorities must confirm that vehicles they licence meet safety standards and that drivers possess valid licences, insurance, and identification. This protects passengers, other road users, and the public.
Secondly, these checks uphold regulatory integrity. Some drivers licensed in one area may work extensively in other regions, where local enforcement may not routinely oversee them. By conducting checks in these “out-of-area” locations, councils like Wolverhampton can verify compliance with their licensing requirements.
