The incident highlights ongoing concerns within the licensed taxi and private hire sector about illegal touting and unlicensed operations. Licensed drivers are subject to criminal record checks, medical assessments, insurance requirements and vehicle inspections. Industry representatives have consistently warned that illegal operators pose safety risks to passengers and undermine compliant businesses.
Driving while disqualified carries a potential custodial sentence, while operating without insurance can result in penalty points, fines and vehicle seizure. Drug driving offences are also treated seriously by the courts and can lead to further driving bans and criminal convictions if confirmed.
