Dorset taxi fare review on the horizon following trade request

Dorset Council is considering a review of taxi fares later this year, following a request from a local taxi company.

The proposal includes increasing the first mile rate by 40p and each subsequent mile by 20p. Additionally, the company has suggested introducing a booking fee.

The last adjustment to maximum taxi rates in the Dorset Council area, excluding Weymouth and Portland, occurred in April 2022. The Dorset licensing committee will now decide whether to initiate a review process. This would start with consultations with drivers and taxi firm owners, followed by a public consultation on any proposed changes.

Currently, Dorset's hackney carriage fees are divided into three tariff bands: 7am to 11pm, 11pm to 7am, and a higher rate on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.

The basic day rate consists of a £3 initial charge, £4.50 for the first mile, and £2.80 for each additional mile. The nighttime rates from 11pm to 7am include a £4.50 initial charge, £6.60 for the first mile, and £4.20 for each additional mile.

The upcoming review aims to address the fare structure and potentially implement the suggested changes to ensure the rates remain fair and sustainable for both taxi operators and passengers.
