DROP-OFF FEE ALTERNATIVE: Which UK airports are offering alternative free drop-off areas for passengers?

As airport drop-off charges continue to rise across the UK, drivers and passengers are increasingly looking for ways to avoid paying up to £10 simply to reach the terminal. While every one of the country’s 20 busiest airports now levies a charge for dropping passengers directly outside departures, most still offer free alternatives for those prepared to walk a little further or catch a shuttle bus.

New information compiled by the RAC shows that 17 of the UK’s busiest airports continue to provide some form of free drop-off option, although these are often located in long-stay or mid-stay car parks rather than outside the terminal itself. The arrangements vary considerably, with some airports offering dedicated shuttle buses while others require passengers to walk several minutes.

London Gatwick remains one of the more generous options despite charging £10 at the terminal. Drivers can use the Long Stay car park free for up to two hours before passengers take a complimentary shuttle bus to the terminal. Heathrow also provides free drop-offs via its park and ride car parks, with shuttle buses connecting to each terminal.

Several airports have dedicated free drop-off zones. Manchester offers a free area at JetParks 1, while London Stansted provides free drop-offs at its Mid Stay car park with a complimentary shuttle service. London Luton allows up to two hours free in its Long Stay car park before passengers take a bus to the terminal.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh provides a free drop-off area at its Long Stay car park, around a 10-minute walk from the terminal, while Birmingham allows motorists to stop free for up to 10 minutes in an area around five to 10 minutes’ walk away. Bristol and Glasgow both offer one hour of free parking in designated waiting or long-stay areas with shuttle buses available.

Newcastle’s free option is among the most generous. Its Airport Waiting Zone on Callerton Parkway allows motorists to park free for up to 90 minutes before passengers board a shuttle bus to the terminal. East Midlands also provides free parking for up to 60 minutes in its Long Stay car park, with passengers able to either walk 15 to 20 minutes or use a shuttle bus.

Liverpool John Lennon offers 20 minutes free at Drop Off 2, around a 10-minute walk from the terminal. Leeds Bradford provides one hour’s free parking within its Mid Stay car park, just a five-minute walk away, while Aberdeen allows one hour free in its Long Stay car park with either a short walk or shuttle bus available.

Cardiff Wales also continues to offer one of the more convenient free options, allowing passengers to be dropped off or picked up free for up to 20 minutes in Car Park 2, just a short walk from the terminal. Belfast International provides 15 minutes free in its Long Stay car park, while Belfast City allows 10 minutes free in its Long Stay facility located around five minutes from the terminal.

Only three of the UK’s 20 busiest airports do not currently advertise a practical free alternative. London City and Bournemouth list no free drop-off option, while Southampton says it does not currently offer free drop-off or pick-up facilities because of the temporary closure of its Long Stay car park.

For taxi drivers, however, these free alternatives are rarely practical as licensed taxis are generally expected to drop passengers directly outside departures, particularly when carrying luggage, families, business travellers or passengers with reduced mobility. As a result, customers rarely ask licensed drivers for the free option, which is then reflected in the overall fare minus the hefty drop-off fee.
